Eisriesenwelt — World of the Ice Giants

 The Eisriesenwelt (German for "World of the Ice Giants") is a natural limestone ice cave located in Werfen, Austria, about 40 km south of Salzburg. The cave is inside the Hochkogel mountain in the Tennengebirge section of the Alps. It is the largest ice cave in the world, extending more than 42km and visited by about 200,000 tourists every year.

The Tennengebirge mountains were formed during the late Tertiary period, during the Würm glaciation period of the Pleistocene. The mountain range, one of the massifs in the Austrian Alps, is the largest karst plateau in the Salzburger Alps, and the Eisriesenwelt is located at the rim of this plateau. Although the cave has a length of 42 km, only the first kilometer, the area that tourists are allowed to visit, is covered in ice. The rest of the cave is formed of limestone. Eisriesenwelt was formed by the Salzach river, which eroded passageways into the mountain. The ice formations in the cave were formed by thawing snow which drained into the cave and froze during winter. Since the entrance to the caves is open year-round, chilly winter winds blow into the cave and freeze the snow inside. In summer, a cold wind from inside the cave blows toward the entrance and prevents the formations from melting.

History — The first official discovery of Eisriesenwelt was by Anton Posselt, a natural scientist from Salzburg, in 1879, though he only explored the first two hundred meters of the cave. Before his discovery, the cave was known only to locals, who, believing that it was an entrance to Hell, refused to explore it. In 1880, Posselt published his findings in a mountaineering magazine, but the report was quickly forgotten. Alexander von Mörk, a speleologist from Salzburg, was one of the few people who remembered Posselt's discovery. He led several expeditions into the caves beginning in 1912, which were soon followed by other explorers. Von Mörk was killed in World War I in 1914, and an urn containing his ashes is inside a niche in the cave. In 1920, a cabin for the explorers, Forscherhütte, was built and the first routes up the mountain were established. Tourists began to arrive soon after, attracted by the cave's sudden popularity. Later another cabin, the Dr. Oedl House, and paths from Werfen and Tänneck were constructed. In 1955 a cable car was built, shortening the 90-minute climb to 3 minutes. Today the Eisriesenwelt cave is owned by the National Austrian Forest Commission, which has leased it to the Salzburg Association of Cave Exploration since 1928. The Forest Commission still receives a percentage of the entrance fees.

Visiting — The cave is open from May 1st to October 26th every year. Its operating hours are 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in July and August and 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in May/June and September/October.  Temperatures inside the cave are usually below freezing, and warm clothing is recommended. Photography is not permitted once visitors are inside the cave. The tour begins at the entrance to the cave, and continues inwards to Posselt Hall, a large room with a stalagmite called Posselt Tower in the centre. Past the Posselt Tower, one encounters an ashen cross on the wall of the cave, marking the farthest point of exploration of Anton Posselt. From there one can see the Great Ice Embankment, a massive formation that rises to a height of 25 metres and represents the area of greatest ice growth. Next is Hymir's Castle, named after a giant in Norse mythology. Here stalactites create a formation called Frigga's Veil, or the Ice Organ. Next on the tour is the Alexander von Mörk Cathedral, one of the largest rooms in the cave and the final resting place of von Mörk's ashes. The final stop on the tour is the Ice Palace, a kilometre into the cave and 400 metres underground. From here, visitors must turn around and walk back through the caves to reach the entrance. Worlds Largest Cave in Vietnam

The World’s Largest Cave passage was discovered deep within a remote Vietnamese jungle. The Son Doong cave measures 262 feet by 262 feet (80 meters by 80 meters) and at least 2.8 miles (4.5 kilometers) deep, making it the largest single cave passage ever discovered, according to National Geographic News, where the discovery was announced.


The previous record holder, Deer Cave in Malaysia, is 300 feet by 300 feet (91 m by 91 m) in parts, but is only about a mile (1.6 km) long.

World Largest Handicapped Walking Stick World Record 2010 in India

At 3rd December 2010, World Disabled Day 2010, in intend to set Guinness World Record  Mr. Rangitsingh Gohil and Pavan Solanki had introduced  the “World's Biggest Handicapped Walking Stick”. It is available at Blind People Association, Vastrapur, Ahmedabad, India. Motivation behind to set this record is to help and  Motivate disabled people and give job opportunities for disabled People 

An Ahmedabad-based professional set world record for World Largest Handicapped Walking Stick - took him straight into the World record books. Mr. Ranjitsing and Mr. Pavan Solanki set together this record at the occasion of World Disabled Day 2010 on 3^rd December 2010 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India

The world record venue selected for the event was “Blind People Association” (BPA) which is one of the leading educational institutes for disabled people for all Age.

He has started Meet International Organization which is one of the leading Disability Helpline service is in India. He was also awarded President Award.

Mr. Pavan Solanki is IT Professional and help to disabled and Blind People.  He is also volunteering service provider of BPA, they organize educational workshop and entertainment program for Disabled People. In last year, they trained over 20 blind and handicapped people for Kite Flying and they participate in International Kite Festival 2009.

This Walking Stick will be displayed for a week at Blind People Association. World's largest pool

Already drawing the crowds in the South American resort of San Alfonso del Mar in Chile, this artificial lagoon and swimming pool is eight hectares in size and contains an incredible 250,000 cubic meters of water.

Acknowledged by Guinness World Records as being the world’s largest swimming pool, the lagoon trounces all other record holders in the category, including the Orthlieb pool in Casablanca, Morocco, itself a huge 150 meters by 100 meters – the San Alfonso pool is 1km in length.

Worlds Largest T-shirt Guinness Record set by Qatar Petroleum Company

Qatar Petroleum Company (Qapco) yesterday unveiled the world’s largest t-shirt, entering the Guinness Book of World Records.

The event was the latest show of support for the Qatar 2022 World Cup Bid ahead of FIFA’s announcement of the host nations for 2018 and 2022 on December 2.

The t-shirt was shown at Aspire Zone, and the event was attended by Qapco officials, Qatar 2022 bid officials as well as members of the public and a judge from the Guinness Book of World Records.

The previous world’s largest t-shirt was verified by Guinness World Records in September of this year in South Africa.


The 2,782 sq m shirt which is housed in an airport in Johannesburg occupies the same area as 10 tennis courts and is big enough for some 16,692 people to stand upon.

The area of Qapco’s t-shirt is 3,516.25 sq m and is made of cotton.

Qapco board director and general manager, Mohamed Yousef al-Mulla expressed his pride at the achievement and highlighted the importance of supporting the Qatar 2022 bid.

“This will be an opportunity to the rest of the world to get a better understanding, not just of Qatar, but the whole region, its people and its culture,” he said of the bid.

Al-Mulla explained that Qapco wanted to find a way to support the bid and the community, and had decided that this world record attempt would be the ideal way to do so.

He explained that the six-tonne t-shirt had been produced in China before being transported to Doha and its location at Aspire Zone.

The t-shirt was kept at Aspire yesterday, but will be housed at the Museum of Islamic Art in the future, said al-Mulla.

Gareth Deaves from Guinness World Records explained that the t-shirt had been verified as being a real t-shirt before it was officially measured.

“I’m happy to announce that we have a new world record measuring 72.2m by 48.7m,” said Deaves adding “congratulations to Qapco and congratulations to Qatar.”

Director of communications for the 2022 bid, Nasser al-Khater thanked Qapco for their efforts in supporting the bid, and praised the whole country for getting involved with Qatar’s efforts to host the World Cup.

“With just 10 days until the announcement we are feeling the pressure and the excitement,” he said, adding “I hope that next time I speak to you we will be the winners of the race.”

VIPs and officials signed the t-shirt last night after al-Mulla was presented with a certificate by Deaves.

The evening was a celebration of the bid and the impact it has had on corporate organisations getting involved with the project.

And the buzz around the world’s largest t-shirt was all about December 2 and whether the day will bring good news to Qatar.
